Dealing with Anxiety Caused by The Credit Crunch

The Law of Attraction

I am a believer in the theory that the thoughts and feelings inside you will help you attract more of the same. So when you read about the all-pervasive credit crunch, do not buy into the fear and hysteria. Accept that times are challenging but flip it around and accept that there are also opportunities to be had. Some people are thriving and prospering because of the credit crunch, so look for the opportunities and avoid the hype.

Facing Challenges

From now on, accept that all the things you experience, good and bad, are life lessons. Facing challenges and overcoming difficulties, instead of backing away in fear, allows you to grow and learn about life.

Maybe set yourself a new challenge. If you are really bold, a parachute, bungee jump or firewalk are great challenges that will give your mind something positive to focus on. If you are feeling stuck or anxious, take action and do something a bit different that gets your heart going. When you challenge yourself you will feel happier and more alive.

Gratitude

To minimise stress in general, you need to develop a more positive approach to everything in your life. Gratitude is always a good place to start when you want to feel more positive. It is all too easy to give our attention to the things that are wrong or that don’t work for us. Focus now on the things that do work for you. If you are fortunate enough to be healthy in your mind, body and spirit, take a moment to give thanks for that. If you have perfect use of your arms and legs and you have the ability to walk, run, read, write, hear, see, talk, etc, then you are very lucky. Some people don’t have these simple blessings and to have the ability to do one or more of these things would be their ultimate wish.

Laughter

Make more effort to be light-hearted and to have fun with family, friends and work colleagues. Medical research has proved that laughter decreases stress hormones. During laughter, Dopamine levels decrease. (Dopamine is involved in the "fight or flight response" and is associated with elevated blood pressure.) Laughing provides a workout for the diaphragm and increases the body's ability to use oxygen, making it an ideal aerobic exercise. It relaxes muscles and strengthens the immune system. Laughter is free and has no known negative side effects - enjoying a good belly laugh empties your lungs of more air than it takes in resulting in a cleansing effect. In conclusion, laughter really is the best medicine for general stress and anxiety!

Exercise

Physical exercise is one of the most effective ways of relieving stress. It improves your mental health as well as your physical health. When exercising, the body releases chemical substances (endorphins) that are similar in nature to opiates. These natural substances produced by our own bodies, are free of side effects, except for making us feel good.

Meditation

Most of us are too busy to notice the beauty around us. Why not ‘stop and smell the roses?’ Today’s lifestyles are in the fast lane and our minds are filled with to-do lists and what we haven't done. We are a long time dead so take time out to gaze at the sea, listen to birdsong, breathe in the air.
